How A Single Letter From The Alphabet Saved My Life...
On November 6th, 2019, I wanted to take my own life... and it felt like nothing and no one could stop me.
I suffer from severe depression. And anyone with this illness will tell you, once your thoughts go into the “dark place,” it becomes increasingly more difficult to swing back...
Imagine being infected with a voice in your brain, begging you to disappear because the idea of leaving everything behind seems less painful than enduring another heartbreak or set-back...
I’m not writing this to make you feel sorry for me.
I simply want to share my experience of how I was pulled out of the darkest period in my life, all thanks to an unexpected gift that sparked a life-saving memory...
And if this solution helped me—giving me a brighter purpose that gets me out of bed in the morning— then I’m quite confident it can help you as well.
See, a few months before the “dark day,” I lost my husband of 25 years. A month before he died, he surprised me with tickets for a 3-month long cruise that was going to embark that next summer.
After raising 3 amazing kids and sending them out into the world, we both deserved an extended vacation.
I remember the days leading up to his death. We would stay up late in bed, talking about what we were going to do on the cruise. It felt like our first years of marriage all over again.
I didn’t know it at the time, but those nights would become my happiest memories with George...
Then one day he fell, and never got back up.
After my husband’s funeral, I returned the cruise tickets and set aside the cash to help out any of my kids with college books or treats for the grandkids.
Then it was just me...
I was all alone. No kids. No husband. Sure I’m on medication, but anyone that knows real pain will tell you, no medicine besides time can solve the deepest of hurt...
So on that day in November, as I sat there, wondering the next steps to make the pain go away, my eldest son called and said he wanted to “drop by” on his way home from work. He was always busy, so it was quite a surprise.
“We brought you something,” he said over the phone.
“We?” I asked.
“You’ll see,” he said.
About an hour later, my eldest son and my two other children showed up at my house. It was a big surprise because I haven’t seen all 3 of my children together like this in over a year!
I hugged them and cried and told them how sorry I was, even though I didn’t have anything to be sorry about. Just seeing my children overfilled me with so much love.
They consoled me, and the youngest made a joke (like always) and it made us all laugh and it perked the mood right up.
Then my eldest said all 3 of them pitched in (including the one still in college) and got me something...
“We know how much dad meant to you,” my eldest said, “so we wanted to buy you something to remember him by.”
My eldest handed me a beautifully-wrapped designer box with the well-known David Von signature splayed across the top.
When I opened the box, my heart skipped at least 3 beats...
It was a stunning 14K gold necklace with the letter “G” pendant, encrusted with shimmering, perfectly cut diamonds.
“You know we’ll always be here for you,” my middle child said, “but we could never give you the encouragement the way dad did.”
We were like every married couple. We fought. We yelled. We made up. We loved each other. We supported one another. The one thing we never did... was give up.
Every time I wanted to give up, George was there to make me laugh, bring a smile to my face, or give me comfort when I needed it the most.
George made me want to be brave.
The necklace my children gave me isn’t just a piece of “jewelry”... it’s a reminder to keep going, no matter what.
I know you won’t believe me when I tell you this next part...
But ever since I received this necklace as a gift, I carry myself differently. I feel proud of who I am. I face trials with a smile. And when I do feel myself “sliding” into a sad state, I simply remember my support, my George.
I’m Alice from Minnesota, and this is my David Von Story...
Sincerely,
P.S. When I emailed David Von my story, they kindly asked if I wouldn’t mind sharing my story with their audience. (Psst... they helped me write it all out.)
I was more than happy to share my story because after I did some research about the necklace, I got to learn more about David Von and the company’s mission.
